Google AI Mode now has a billion users: what changes for your business

At Google I/O 2026, search made its biggest leap in 25 years: AI Mode with Gemini 3.5 Flash, a multimodal search box and agents. This is how it affects your visibility.

A few years ago, “ranking on Google” meant appearing in the first ten blue links. Today, more and more people type a complete question, receive an answer written by Google's AI and never see those ten links.

In May, at Google I/O 2026, Google announced what it describes as the biggest upgrade to its search box in more than 25 years. Months later the change is already noticeable, and if your business depends on being found on Google, it affects you directly.

What did Google announce at I/O 2026?

That AI search stopped being an experiment and became the main experience. According to Google's official blog post on what is new in Search:

  • AI Mode passed a billion monthly users, and its queries have more than doubled every quarter since launch.
  • Gemini 3.5 Flash became AI Mode's default model worldwide.
  • The search box is now multimodal: it accepts text, images, files, videos and Chrome tabs.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode merged into a single experience: from an AI overview you can keep asking without losing context.
  • Search agents arrive: information agents that monitor the web for you and, in the United States, AI-made bookings and calls to local businesses.

The full list is in the 100 announcements from Google I/O 2026.

What does AI Mode mean for my business?

Three concrete changes in how people find you:

BeforeNow with AI Mode
Ten links and the user choosesA written answer citing a few sources
Searches of two or three wordsComplete questions, with follow-ups
The user visits your website to actAn agent can act using your data

Fewer clicks, more citations

When the answer appears written at the top, many people no longer visit any site. The pages the AI cites as a source get the attention that remains. The goal is no longer just to rank: it is to be the source the AI chooses. That work has a name, and we explain it in what GEO is and how to appear in AI answers.

Searches look like conversations

With the multimodal box and follow-up questions, people ask the way they talk: “which CRM works for selling on WhatsApp if I have three sales reps?”. Pages that answer specific questions, with clear data, fit better. (By the way, we answer that question in Zoho CRM or Kommo: which to choose.)

Agents start to act

An AI booking or calling a local business is still a feature limited to the United States, but it sets the direction: your business data has to be complete and consistent on your site and in your Google profile so an agent can use it.

How do I prepare my website for AI Mode?

  1. Answer real questions on your site. FAQ sections and pages that clearly explain what you do, for whom and how long it takes.
  2. Use structured data. Organization, service and FAQ schema tells Google and the AI who you are without them having to guess.
  3. Take care of speed and technical health. A slow site full of indexing errors is unlikely to become a source of anything; see why website speed affects your sales.
  4. Keep your data identical everywhere. Same name, phone and address on your website, your Google profile and your social media.
  5. Measure in Search Console. Check which queries bring you impressions and which pages get indexed.

Common mistake: thinking SEO is dead and no longer taking care of the site. It is the opposite: AI Mode and AI Overviews rely on Google's index. If your pages are not indexed or are slow, you are not a candidate to be cited.

In short

Search did not disappear: it changed shape. The ten blue links are no longer the goal; being the source the AI cites is the new one. Businesses with clear content, structured data and a technically healthy site will keep showing up, now also inside Google's answers. We work on it with you in our SEO and GEO with AI service.

Frequently asked questions

What is Google AI Mode?

It is Google's AI search experience: it answers complex questions with a written response, lets you ask follow-up questions and shows links to the sources. According to Google, it already has more than a billion monthly users.

Does traditional SEO still work?

Yes. AI Mode and AI Overviews rely on Google's index and cite web pages. A fast, well-structured site with clear answers is still the foundation for showing up, now also inside AI answers.

What is GEO?

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of preparing your site so AI search engines understand it, cite it and recommend it in their answers.

Can Google's agents already book at my business?

According to Google, AI-made bookings and calls to local businesses are available in the United States. Even so, they set the direction: your data must be complete and consistent.
