Odoo Community vs Enterprise: differences and which one suits you

Odoo has a free open-source edition and a paid one with more apps and services. What each includes, what only Enterprise brings and how to choose.

A company grows and, without noticing, ends up with five systems: inventory in an Excel sheet, invoicing in another program, sales in a CRM, purchasing in email and payroll in a folder. Every month, someone spends days cross-checking data to know how much was sold and how much is left in the warehouse.

An ERP like Odoo exists so all of that lives in one place. According to its official website, more than 28 million people use it. But before implementing it there is a decision that defines the project: Community or Enterprise?

What is the difference between Odoo Community and Enterprise?

Community is the free, open-source edition; Enterprise is the paid-license edition that adds apps, infrastructure and services. According to the official editions comparison, Community is the foundation on which Enterprise is built, and you can switch editions at any time.

What do both editions have?

The core apps that run a company: CRM, sales, accounting, invoicing, inventory and most business modules, accessed from the browser. For many small and medium businesses, this already solves the five-systems problem.

What does only Odoo Enterprise include?

Services, mobility, no-code customization and specialized modules. According to Odoo's editions page:

  • Functional support and version upgrades.
  • Cloud hosting by Odoo.
  • Mobile apps for Android and iOS.
  • Studio, to customize without coding.
  • Modules such as payroll, documents with spreadsheets, field service, approvals and ESG.
  • Advanced manufacturing features: shop floor control, dashboard and scheduling.

Watch out: Community being free does not mean running it is free. You need to host, maintain and update it yourself, and version upgrades are not included. It is the same logic as any software you host, as we explain with n8n on your own server.

How do I choose the right edition?

By what you need today and who will maintain the system.

If your business…You should choose
Uses only core apps and has someone to maintain the serverCommunity
Wants to start with no license costCommunity
Needs a mobile app, Studio or payrollEnterprise
Wants support and upgrades includedEnterprise
Has manufacturing with shop floor controlEnterprise

Common mistake: implementing every module at once. Odoo is modular for a reason: start with the process that hurts most (inventory, invoicing or sales), stabilize it and then add the next one.

Do I need an ERP or is a CRM enough?

If your problem is selling and following up, a CRM. If your problem is that sales, inventory, purchasing and accounting do not talk to each other, an ERP. Many companies that come asking for Odoo actually only need a good CRM, and vice versa. If you are in that doubt, also see Zoho CRM or Kommo: which to choose.

In short

Community is ideal to start with the core apps if you have a way to maintain it; Enterprise makes sense when you need additional apps, mobile, Studio or support. What matters is that the five systems become one. In the assessment we review your operation and recommend the edition that makes sense: see our Odoo implementation service.

Frequently asked questions

Does Odoo Community work for invoicing and inventory?

Yes. The core apps such as CRM, sales, accounting, invoicing and inventory are available in both editions.

Does Odoo Community have a mobile app?

According to Odoo's official comparison, the mobile apps for Android and iOS are part of Enterprise. Community is used from the browser.
