Paused WhatsApp templates: why it happens and how to avoid it
Meta pauses or disables WhatsApp templates with poor quality. Learn what High, Medium and Low mean, why it happens and how to protect your sends.
It's Friday, the promotion is ready and you message your entire list. On Monday you open your platform and the template you used every week can no longer be sent: it was paused. Nobody warned you in time, and next week's campaign depends on it.
This happens to businesses that use the WhatsApp API without watching an indicator that Meta measures all the time. The quality of your templates decides whether you can keep sending them.
What does it mean when a WhatsApp template is paused?
A paused template is an approved template that Meta temporarily blocked because customers reported it or barely read it. According to Meta's documentation on templates, the cause is recurring negative feedback or low read rates. While it is paused, you cannot use it in any send.
If the problem continues, the template can become disabled. That also stems from recurring negative feedback and it cannot be sent either.
How does Meta rate template quality?
Meta evaluates each template based on usage, customer feedback and engagement, and shows it in four states. In WhatsApp Manager, approved templates appear with one of these labels:
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Active, quality pending | Not enough data yet | Send carefully and to few contacts |
| Active, high quality | Customers respond well | Keep doing what you do |
| Active, medium quality | There is negative feedback or few reads; it may be paused soon | Review the text and audience now |
| Active, low quality | It is in danger of being paused or disabled | Address what customers are reporting |
Meta clarifies that quality is shown only on approved templates and that status changes arrive by webhook, which you can connect to an automatic alert, as we explain in webhooks with n8n.

Why do customers report a template?
Almost always because they receive a message they did not ask for or that is useless to them. Meta's documentation talks about negative feedback and low read rates, and in practice the most frequent causes are three:
- Sending promotions to contacts who never agreed to receive them.
- Using a marketing template with the tone of a notice, or the other way around.
- Repeating the same message to the same person without adding anything new.
Common mistake: waiting for the template to be paused before reviewing it. When quality is medium you still have time to fix it, and when it is low Meta warns that it is in danger of being paused.
To choose the right template type, read the guide on marketing, utility and authentication templates.
How do you keep Meta from pausing your templates?
Send only to people who opted in, with a useful message, and measure quality before repeating the campaign. A simple plan:
- Keep proof of consent for each contact in your CRM.
- Segment: the shoe promotion does not go to someone who bought a washing machine.
- Give a clear way out, so customers can unsubscribe without having to report you.
- Launch first to a small group and check quality before sending to the rest.
- If a template drops to medium, change it or adjust the audience the same day.
We cover the legal side of consent in the guide on Law 1581 and WhatsApp.

Does quality also affect how many messages you can send?
Yes: quality is one of the two requirements for your message limit to rise. According to the messaging limits documentation, a new portfolio starts at 250 unique contacts per 24 hours outside the customer service window. To scale automatically above 2,000 you must send high-quality messages across all your numbers and templates, and have used at least half of your limit in the last 7 days.
Verifying your business is another path to 2,000, as we explain in the guide on business verification in Meta. A low-quality template slows your growth even if your business is verified.
How long does it take to approve a new template?
Meta says the review can take up to 24 hours. If it rejects the template, or its status changes to anything other than approved, it cannot be sent. That is why it pays to have backup versions ready before a big commercial date, and not to create the template on the day of the campaign.
In short
The template that stopped working on Monday did not fail out of bad luck: it piled up reports or low readership and Meta acted. Take care of consent, segment and check quality before each send.
